Trump insists on his innocence

Former US President Trump has referred to the charges against him in a hush money scandal as "an insult to our country". Upon returning from his court appearance in New York, he delivered a campaign speech to his supporters.

Former US President Donald Trump has referred to the charges brought against him in a hush money scandal as an "insult to our country". Speaking to a crowd of supporters at his private residence, Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump stated, "I never thought something like this could happen in America. The only crime I have committed is fearlessly defending our nation against those who want to destroy it."

Trump also referred to the lead prosecutor in Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, as a "criminal" during his 25-minute speech. He claimed that the presiding New York judge, Juan Merchan, "hates" him. The 76-year-old Republican has stated that he plans to run for president again in 2024.

Trump talks about "fake".

Regarding his candidacy, Trump referred to the legal accusations as an interference in the upcoming presidential elections. The 76-year-old referred to the charges as the latest case of attacks on him through "fraudulent investigations." He pointed to the two impeachment proceedings during his presidency as examples. He called the case in New York "fake," only brought forward to disrupt the 2024 presidential elections, and demanded it be dropped immediately.

On his way back to Florida, Trump expressed on his social media platform "Truth Social" that the Tuesday hearing had been shocking for many in the sense that there were no "surprises" and therefore no case.

"Practically every legal expert has said that there is no case here. Nothing illegal was done!" claimed Trump without evidence, ignoring the overwhelming number of legal experts in the USA who not only consider the charges against Trump as legitimate but also regard the allegations as quite serious and substantive.

Trump sees himself as a victim again.

Hours before his campaign speech, the charges against Trump were released in New York regarding a hush money payment of $130,000 (approximately €120,000) to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records. The former president pleaded not guilty to all charges in court.

Trump is the first ex-president in US history to face criminal charges. The right-wing populist has repeatedly denied all allegations and has referred to himself as a victim of a politically motivated "witch hunt."
